The Ceremony

Gurdwara Singh Sabha

1201 Abrams Rd, Richardson, TX 75081

Baraat

The Baraat is the groom's procession. The grooms gathers with his family and friends to sing and dance their way toward the Gurdwara to meet the brides family.

Milni

The milni is the meeting of both families before the wedding ceremony. Key family members from both sides will exchange garlands and greet each other, symbolizing the acceptance of two families into one.

Breakfast

After the milni, guests may gather together inside the gurdwara to enjoy breakfast together.

As you enter the Gurdwara, you will remove your shoes in a room near the entrance. Also, your head should be covered before you enter the ceremony.

Anand Karaj

The Anand Karaj is the Sikh wedding ceremony. The groom will come forward and be seated facing the holy book. Shortly after, the bride will enter escorted by her parents and will be seated next to the groom. During the entire ceremony, the Sikh religious musicians will be singing traditional hymns.

Guests will be seated on the floor (chairs will be in the back for those who cannot sit on the floor) with men on one side and women on the other. You will see some guests line up to walk to the front of the hall and bow their head in front of the holy book. You are welcome to do this, but it is not mandatory for non-Sikh guests.

What to wear

MEN - Your typical suit or dress pants are appropriate. Remember that you will be sitting on the floor (if possible), so wear something you can sit comfortably in. There will be bandanas provided to cover your head with.

WOMEN - As you are sitting on the floor for the ceremony, leggings/pants with a long top or a long, flowy skirt are recommended. If you own a scarf, please bring it so you can cover your head inside the Gurdwara. We will try to have some available for those who do not have one.
